Back in the Day: July 3rd - Dwight Gayle Signs for Crystal Palace
Wednesday 3rd July 2017
Dwight Gayle signs for Crystal Palace from Peterborough United. The reported £4.5m deal was a record for the Eagles, seeing Gayle pen a four-year contract:
"It's a huge statement for us and it proves that I don't care where I get my people from," said the Palace manager, Ian Holloway. "I believe it's about how good you're going to be, not just how good you are already. I think this fella has got Crystal Palace stamped all over him – the way he moves, the way he chases, the way he works. He's hungry for success and I'm absolutely thrilled that after long conversations we've come up with, I think, a proper Palace player."
It is also reported that Andre Moritz's contract has expired and that he will be leaving that Club:
Midfielder Andre Moritz has been released following the completion of his contract.
The Brazilian joined the club in August 2012, having spent the previous five seasons playing in Turkey.
Moritz signed a one-year deal at Selhurst Park, which expired at the start of July – and the club have decided not to offer an extended deal to the player.
Moritz made his Eagles debut on 25th August 2012, in a 2-1 defeat at Middlesbrough, before scoring his first goal in Palace colours during the 5-0 win over Ipswich in November.
The 26-year-old went on to score in his next two appearances, in a 2-1 success at Peterborough and the 3-0 victory over Derby a week later.
His free kick against Wolves on New Year’s Day – one of two goals he scored in the 3-0 win – was nominated for the club’s Goal of the Season award, but ultimately missed out at the expense of Glenn Murray’s strike against Middlesbrough.
Moritz made a total of 32 appearances for Palace last season, including coming on as a substitute against Watford in the Championship Play-Off Final at Wembley. He found the net on five occasions.
Crystal Palace Football Club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Andre for his service and commitment during the 2012/13 season. We wish him all the best for the future.
