Back in the Day

Saturday 8th October 1960

Crystal Palace 4-2 Barrow

League Division Four – Att: 13,845

Manager: Arthur Rowe

Johnny Byrne was missing for Palace but the hosts were still able to score four times past Barrow. Uphill (2) [Below], Petchy and Woan scored the goals with Flemming and Bannan, no not that one, scoring for the visitors.

Saturday 8th October 1977

Stoke City 0-2 Crystal Palace

League Division Two – Att: 17,749

Manager: Terry Venables

An impressive away win for Palace that was capped off with a wonder goal from Steve Perrin. Nicky Chatterton had already given Palace a first half lead but a red card 20 minutes into the second half for George Graham should have seen Terry Venables men hanging on. Instead, Perrin would smash home an incredible self-set volley into the top corner from range to seal the points.

The video of the match below is also worth watching for some great examples of how the game used to be played. Players are kicking lumps out of each other but they all get up and shake hands at the end of it.

Also look out for the Palace physio kicking the ball into the stands to waste time and a reminder of what it used to be like when TV wasn’t HD.

Saturday 8th October 1983

Cambridge United 1-3 Crystal Palace

League Division Two - Att: 4,323

Manager: Alan Mullery

Saturday 8th October 1988

Blackburn Rovers 5-4 Crystal Palace

League Division Two – Att: 8,022

Manager: Steve Coppell

Just watch the video of this crazy match which had goals, terrible refereeing, a last-minute winner and terrible commentary. “Perhaps the defenders all had leeks for dinner” is a highlight. Also, watch for Steve Coppell kicking off at the end.

Blackburn would have Palace’s number this season – all the way until the second leg of the Play-Off Final.

Monday 8th October 2007

After his spell as manager that failed to live up to his playing days, Peter Taylor is dismissed. Just 1 win in 10 games and his 35% overall win rate as manager goes some of the way to explaining how awful Palace were under the magical winger.
