Back in the Day: October 9th - Palace Beat Watford in Top of the Table Clash

Back in the Day

Wednesday 9th October 1963

Crystal Palace 2-0 Watford

League Division Three – Att: 16,913

Manager: Dick Graham

Peter Burridge (Below) scored twice as Palace picked up a valuable 2 points (the number of points for a win back then) in the promotion battle of the 1963/64 season. Palace would be pipped to the title by Coventry on goal difference, calculated at this time by dividing the amount of goals scored by the number of goals conceded (1.607 for the Sky Blues vs. 1.431 for the Glaziers). However, Palace would beat the opponents in this match to promotion by just 2 points.

Saturday 9th October 1982

Burnley 2-1 Crystal Palace

League Division Two – Att: 6,480

Manager: Alan Mullery

Another reminder of how horrible it was under Alan Mullery. Paul Hinshelwood (below) gave Palace the lead in the 27th minute but second half goals from Steve Taylor (60) and Billy Hamilton (87) would give newly promoted Burnley, who had lost four straight, the win.

Tuesday 9th October 1990

Southend United 1-2 Crystal Palace

League Cup 2nd Round 2nd Leg – Att: 5,199

Manager: Steve Coppell

After spanking Southend 8-0 in the 1st leg of this 2nd Round Rumbelows League Cup match, Palace took it easy on the Shrimpers. Eric Young (40 - Below) and John Salako (48) scored either side of half-time to take the aggregate total to 10 for the Eagles, but Brett Angell (67) would salvage some pride for the hosts.
