Back in the Day: October 12th - Ian Wright Scores his First Goal for Palace

Back in the Day

Wednesday 12th October 1960

Darlington 2-0 Crystal Palace

League Cup 1st Round – Att: 9,940

Manager: Arthur Rowe

Crystal Palace played for the first time in the newly founded Football League Cup.

As all Palace fans know, we are often handed shoddy draws in Cup competition, and this one would start off no differently. An away trip to Doncaster and a disappointing 2-0 defeat through goals from Ray Spencer and Joe Rayment. Our first League Cup win would have to wait… for quite some time.

Saturday 12th October 1963

Crystal Palace 2-1 Millwall

League Division Three – Att: 25,056

Manager: Dick Graham

Crystal Palace defeated rivals Millwall and moved up to second place in the (old) Division Three thanks to a Cliff Holton (below) brace. This is a position the Glaziers would finish at the end of the 1963/64 season.

Millwall, meanwhile, sat rooted to the bottom – relegation would be achieved by the end of the season.

Saturday 12th October 1985

Crystal Palace 3-2 Oldham Athletic

League Division Two – Att: 5,243

Manager: Steve Coppell

Virtual unknown Ian Wright” came off the bench to score his first goal for Crystal Palace, a last-minute header that sealed all three points for the Eagles. Only 5,243 (and probably somewhat less given the time of the goal) were there to witness the beginnings of a goal scoring great in English football.

Just in case it ever comes up in a quiz, the goal was scored past Scotland international, Andy Goram.

Dougie Freedman and Glenn Murray are awarded Championship Manager and Player of the Month respectively after a phenomenal September.

Four wins and one draw from five saw Palace amass 13 from a possible 15 points, and that was enough for Freedman to take the accolade. Meanwhile, Glenn Murray scored six times in September including a hat-trick against Cardiff, a brace against Sheffield Wednesday and a single strike against Bolton Wanderers - all winning goals.
