Crystal Palace 2-0 Preston North End

League Division One – Att: 21,361

Manager: Trevor Francis

Crystal Palace ended their home campaign on a high and all but ended the visitors’ hope of a Play-Off spot. Ten minutes into the second half substitute Andrejs Rubins skipped away from a couple of challenges before feeding David Hopkin (55) on the right-hand edge of the penalty area. The Scot unleashed an unstoppable drive across Tepi Moilanen and into the far top corner. This would be the last game in Hopkin’s Palace career. His right foot and left hand both played important roles in the history of the Club and finding the back of the net in his final match was a somewhat fitting way to end his (second and last) time in SE25

David Hopkin made 127 appearances for Palace scoring 33 times.

On sixty-four minutes, Selhurst Park witnessed a miracle – Ade Akinbiyi scored. Rubins was involved again when Clinton Morrison mishit the Latvian's cross towards goal where Akinbiyi was on hand at the back post to bundle the ball home. Off came the shirt for his famous, but rarely seen, goal celebration.

Off the field, tickets for Simon Rodger’s testimonial went on sale – Crystal Palace vs. Spurs, 31st July 2002.
