Crystal Palace 1-0 Liverpool

League Division One – Att: 23,680

Manager: Steve Coppell

Crystal Palace picked up a much needed win over Liverpool at Selhurst Park, and completed a league double over the Reds, thanks to an Eric Young goal five minutes before the break. However, with hindsight, there is a definite suspicion that Bruce Grobbelaar might have had a bet on 1-0 Palace. He made a complete hash of catching a simple ball and Young tackle him to score. Did the fans in attendance that day witness match fixing?

Saturday 14th March 1998

Aston Villa 3-1 Crystal Palace

Premier League – Att: 33,781

Manager: Attilio Lombardo

Attilio Lombardo took charge of his first Palace match as Player-Manager – within one minute it was 1-0 to Aston Villa and the experimental appointment was already well on its way to failing. Ian Taylor headed home completely unmarked and by half time Savo Milosevic had added two more to leave the Eagles 8 points adrift of safety.

The only bright point of the game was Matt Jansen. Just after the hour he picked the ball up just inside the Villa half, beat three and unleashed a stunning strike into the top corner from 25 yards to draw standing applause from the entire stadium.

Palace Links: Former Palace star Gareth Southgate and future Palace loanee Steve Staunton played for the hosts.
