John Hughes was red carded for the Glaziers, but a Willie Wallace double earned an unlikely replay. Everton’s Joe Royle clattered Palace stopper John Jackson and this kick started a battle that saw two pitch invasions during the match.

Future Palace midfielder Alan Whittle and Colin Harvey scored the Everton goals on the day.

Crystal Palace 1-0 Middlesbrough

FA Cup 3rd Round Replay – Att: 23,119

Manager: Terry Venables

Kenny Sansom scored the only goal of the game as Crystal Palace advanced to the 4th round, setting up a tie with Bristol City. Six days before the two teams had drawn 1-1 at Ayresome Park.

Thursday 15th January 1998

Crystal Palace broke their transfer record, signing Valerien Ismael from Strasbourg for £2.75m.

Tomas Brolin also signed for Palace, from Leeds, on this day. It is fair to say that neither transfer really worked out.

Friday 15th January 1999

Terry Venables announced that he would no longer be the Manager of Crystal Palace and would only remain at the Club in an advisory capacity. The headlong slide towards Administration was gaining momentum.
