Crystal Palace 7-0 Luton Town

FA Cup 3rd Round Replay – Att: 17,000

Manager: Fred Maven

After a 0-0 draw just four days before at Luton, Crystal Palace, somewhat incredulously, beat their Division Three South rivals 7-0!

A Harry Havelock hat-trick did most of the damage, with further goals from Herbert Butler, Lew Griffiths, Jimmy Hamilton and Jimmy Wilde completing the rout.

Crystal Palace 1-0 Liverpool

League Division One – Att: 28,253

Manager: Bert Head

From the Daily Express:

“Bill Shankly stumbled from his stand seat muttering “I don’t believe it” after his Liverpool side lost 1-0 at Crystal Palace. And even after giving himself a half-hour “cooling down” period he didn’t intend discussing the result. Clearly it was all too painful to him. Allowing that Shankly takes every Liverpool reverse as a personal stab in the back, the Liverpool camp could not press their claims of injustice too strongly.

“Palace, who flew off for an eight-day break to Israel yesterday, were clearly bent on achieving their first home League victory since October 17 and played with all their considerable enthusiasm. It made for an aggressively competitive game with Palace finding match-winners in goalkeeper John Jackson and the improving Trevor Dawkins who I made man of the match for his brilliance in midfield in the first hour.

“Palace boss Bert Head said: “We needed this result after seven successive home draws. It seemed we were becoming the pools punters’ greatest allies.

“It was good to beat a side like Liverpool because even though they are obviously going through a transitional stage and some of their youngsters still lack experience, they are still difficult to beat. You only need to look at the League table to see that.” Head pointed out that Palace now have as many points – 27 – as they finished with last season and there are still 17 League matches to go. If Liverpool had three times more chances than Palace, the one that counted fell to the Londoners after an hour. John Sewell swung over a cross. Alan Birchenall outjumped the Liverpool defence and his curling header was crossing the line when Gerry Queen helped it in. There was a light-hearted argument in the Palace dressing-room as to who should get the credit. It went to Queen. But up the corridor Bill Shankly was far from smiling.”

Crystal Palace 2-2 Stockport County

League Division One – Att: 15,517

Manager: Steve Coppell

With Terry Venables quitting the day before as the manager and with the Club struggles being widely reported in the press, falling 0-2 behind inside 23 minutes, to two Brett Angell strikes, was not ideal for Crystal Palace.

However, with Sir Steve Coppell back at the helm, the players showed the sort of fight that would see them through to Division One safety come to the end of the season. Sun Jihai crossed the ball and Clinton Morrison (44) latched onto an Attilio Lombardo nod down to score just before the break and Fan Zhiyi (47) headed home a Lombardo free-kick just after the restart to see Palace claim a point.

Late in the second half, the star of the show Lombardo was replaced by Sasa Curcic. This would be the last time that we would see the great Bald Eagle in a Palace shirt. The Italian scored 10 goals in 49 appearances for the Club. But for injuries, those numbers would have been much higher. Anyone that saw him play will never forget his genius.

Crystal Palace links: Former Eagle Carlo Nash, the Clitheroe Kid, played for County in this one. “He’s a model, and he plays in goal.” Despite the similarities, Jim Gannon is not included in this section.

Plymouth Argyle 0-1 Crystal Palace

Championship – Att: 9,318

Manager: Neil Warnock

Victor Moses scored for the sixth time in eight games to give Palace a 1-0 win that took them within three points of fourth place. It would turn out to be Moses’ last league game and last goal for the Club. He would appear only one more time, in the FA Cup, before, reportedly, the Administrator’s came in and stopped the winger from playing in case he got injured and scuppered a financially needed move away from the Club.

Crystal Palace links: Former Palace midfielder Carl Fletcher played for Plymouth in this one.

After initial naysaying from the Palace fans, the second set of potential new crests were released for fans to vote on. None of which ended up being used. Back to the drawing board they went.
