Back in the Day: November 16th - Palace Hit With Transfer Embargo

Back in the Day

Saturday 16th November 1963

Crystal Palace 8-2 Harwich & Parkeston

FA Cup 1st Round – Att: 15,759

Manager: Dick Graham

This win is the only time that Palace have notched 8 in an FA Cup game as poor non-league Harwich & Parkeston were thumped at Selhurst Park. John Sewell, Bert Howe, Peter Burridge. Ronnie Allen (2) and Cliff Holton (3) scored the goals.

Tuesday 16th November 1982

Saturday 16th November 1985

Leeds United 1-3 Crystal Palace

League Division Two – Att: 10,378

Manager: Steve Coppell

Goals from Jim Cannon (19) and Tony Finnigan (37) saw Palace lead 2-0 at the break, but the hosts would pull one back just ten minutes into the second half through George McCluskey. Finnigan, however, would score again just a minute from time to put the game beyond doubt and produce a disgraceful torrent of racial abuse aimed at the young black Palace midfielder. Finnigan brushed off the behaviour with a big grin and a cheeky wave.

If you listen carefully after both of his goals, you can hear the chants that Ian Stirrup refers to in his report above and at the end of the video the voices closest to the microphone give you a bit of insight into 1980’s England. Horrible.

Saturday 16th November 1991

Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

League Division One – Att: 15,861

Manager: Steve Coppell

Geoff Thomas scored the only goal of the game after 67 minutes after some great work from Marco Gabbiadini down the right-hand side.

News starts to filter through that Jonathan Williams has broken his leg playing for Wales U21 the night before against Armenia. It has been an all too familiar story ever since for the Palace academy graduate.
