Back in the Day: May 18th - Julian Speroni Born in 1979

Back in the Day

Sunday 18th May 1979

Julian Speroni was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Nobody has ever played in between the sticks for Crystal Palace more times.

The stopper has won an unprecedented FOUR Crystal Palace Player of the Year Awards and is the only player to win the award three seasons in a row (2008-10). He also holds the record for the most clean sheets, League appearances as a goalkeeper for Palace and number of failed dribbles around Kevin Campbell that have led to a penalty in front of the Holmesdale Road end.

He stayed and battled for his place after the worst possible start to his Palace career, playing only 21 times between 2004 and the end of the 2006/07 season. From that point on he became the undisputed number one for the following eight seasons and was rewarded with a Testimonial in 2015.

There have been countless saves down the years that have defied belief – none more important than his saves from Ashley Barnes in the Play-Off Semi Final 2nd Leg at Brighton and Troy Deeney in the Final in 2013, to earn his way back to the Premier League after 8 long years.

The man stuck with us through thick and thin. When half of the Hillsborough heroes jumped from the sinking ship in 2010, he remained. The Club was in his heart and he wanted to play nowhere else.

“It means a lot to me. I love this Club and we deserve to be here.”

The accolade of Legend is thrown around far too lightly these days – this man is an actual legend.

Happy Birthday, Julian.
