Back in the Day: August 19th - Malkay Mackay Looks Set to be Named Crystal Palace Manager in 2014

Back in the Day

Saturday 19th August 1967

Rotherham United 0-3 Crystal Palace

League Division Two – Att: 7,949

Manager: Bert Head

Crystal Palace had a perfect start to the 1967/68 season as we romped to victory at Millmoor. Goals from Tommy White (not Black), David Payne and the first of eighteen this season for Bobby Woodruff (Below) won the game.

Names that you definitely don’t hear in football anymore: Harrold Wilcockson

Alliteration Watch: Colin Clish?! Get out of town!

Tuesday 19th August 1975

Crystal Palace 3-0 Colchester United

League Cup 1st Round 1st Leg – Att: 10,006

Manager: Malcolm Allison

A David Kemp brace and a Dave Swindlehurst strike got Palace off to the perfect start in this tie. We’d only make it as far as the second round of the League Cup this season but we would fair slightly better in the FA Cup.

Alliteration Watch: Who are you trying to kid, Bobby Roberts? Your name is Robert Roberts and we all know it is. The question is, why would you do this to your child? The fact that he went by Bobby shows that he hated his parents for it.

Tuesday 19th August 1980

Crystal Palace 3-4 Tottenham Hotspur

League Division One – Att: 27,841

Manager: Terry Venables

Spurs raced into a two goal lead with two Garth Crooks (yup, the TV pundit for the youngsters wondering) strikes in the opening twenty minutes. Vince Hilaire pulled a goal back on twenty four minutes but Glenn Hoddle restored the two goal cushion on thirty-five.

Neil Smillie then reeled Spurs in again, making it 2-3 with twenty five minutes remaining but it would all go wrong for Palace. Hilaire received his marching orders three minutes later and a further four minutes later Steve Archibald seemingly put the game beyond Palace.

Venables Eagles had other plans though and Jim Cannon ensured a tense finish with a goal ten minutes from time but Spurs would ultimately hold on to move to the top of Division One.

Current Weed manager, Chris Hughton, lined up for Spurs in this match.

Wednesday 19th August 1992

Oldham Athletic 1-1 Crystal Palace

Premier League – Att: 11,063

Manager: Steve Coppell

It’s the inaugural Premier League season and Palace face Oldham Athletic on game week two. Graeme Sharp put the hosts ahead on sixteen minutes before an Eddie McGoldrick (Below) strike five minutes after the break levelled up matters. In a season of such small margins (relegated instead of Oldham by 1 point) we can look at this one as a day in which we can deeply regret not finding winner.

Alliteration Watch: Mike Milligan. I’d like to think that they called him Mikey. Definitely gives it a better ring. Chris ‘Cookie’ Coleman also making an appearance for the first time in this feature.

Thursday 19th August 2010

I have included this mainly because I cannot believe that this was five years ago! Wes moved on to have a good time of it at Swindon Town before signing for Glasgow Rangers this season.

Friday 19th August 2011

Anthony Gardner signs for Crystal Palace for another season. He would be robbed of the player of the year award at the end of the 2011/12 season as injury for the last few months saw his performances drift from the memories of the voters - Jonathan Parr took the award instead pretty much by default.

Sunday 19th August 2012

This is just prior to the signings of Damien Delaney, Andrew Moritz and Yannick Bolasie. Sometimes I know what I am talking about.

Tuesday 19th August 2014

Then again....

Malky Mackay is set to be unveiled as the new manager of Crystal Palace, replacing the departed Tony Pulis. Everyone that is in the know and every newspaper is reporting it as a done deal that will see the former Cardiff City gaffer unveiled the following day.

Meanwhile, a certain Vincent Tan stirs.
