Wednesday 21st April 2004
Crystal Palace 3-0 Sunderland
League Division One – Att: 18,291
Manager: Iain Dowie
Iain Dowie’s Eagles made full use of their game in hand, hammering automatic promotion-chasing Sunderland and moving level on points with the West Ham, who occupied the last Play-Off place.
The game hinged on an incident in the 20th minute. Andy Johnson raced away, lifted the ball over Mart Poom and proceeded in getting flattened by the Estonian stopper. The referee reached for his red card and, after having to wait four minutes for the goalkeeping change to occur, Johnson (24) smashed the spot kick down the middle for his 27th goal of the season.
The killer second goal took a while to come, but just after the hour Johnson was away again down the right and his centre was nodded home by Neil Shipperley (63) in front of a jubilant Holmesdale Road end.
Then came the magic. Johnson flicked on Mikele Leigertwood long ball and Dougie Freedman (80) crashed home a volley from the corner of the penalty area. What. A. Goal!
