Back in the Day

Saturday 23rd October 1920

England 2-0 Ireland

Roker Park

Palace wing-half Roy McCracken made his first debut for Ireland and in doing so became the first player from the newly formed Division Three to play at International level.

Wednesday 23rd October 1963

Crewe Alexandra 0-2 Crystal Palace

League Division Three – Att: 5,883

Manager: Dick Graham

Goals from Cliff Holton and Ronnie Allen moved Palace up to fourth in Division Three. Ultimately Dick Graham’s Palace would finish in second place and achieve promotion to the second tier, returning for the first time since 1925.

Monday 23rd October 2000

Dougie Freedman returned to Crystal Palace. Arguably the best £600K that any team has ever spent, and that is just looking at what he would go on to do in this season alone – efforts that ensured that Crystal Palace are the Club that we know today.

Saturday 23rd October 2004

Crystal Palace 3-0 West Brom

Premier League – Att: 22,922

Manager: Iain Dowie

Iain Dowie’s Palace picked up a well needed second win of the season thanks to goals from Fitz Hall (5) and Andy Johnson (12 pen, 51). It was the final goal that stole the show. Johnson picked the ball up just inside the Baggies half and was as direct as always. Then, 25 yards from goal, he drilled the ball low and in off the post to put the cherry on top of a perfect afternoon for the Eagles.

Tuesday 23rd October 2007

Crystal Palace 1-3 Stoke City

Championship – Att: 14,237

Manager: Neil Warnock

Not a night to remember at Selhurst Park, especially looking back now at such an impressive Tony Pulis win, but the night did have one little piece of Crystal Palace – it would be the last time that Dougie Freedman scored for the Eagles.

Tuesday 23rd October 2012

Barnsley 1-1 Crystal Palace

Championship – Att: 8,195

Manager: Curtis Flemming and Lennie Lawrence (Caretakers)

To complete Dougie Freedman day we have his controversial departure to Bolton. The Scot headed north despite Palace going great guns in the division.

Glenn Murray opened the scoring on 11 minutes and it looked like Palace would hold on to the win, but an 86th-minute curler from David Perkins earned a point for the hosts.

Thursday 23rd October 2013

And as if by magic, one year later to the very day Freedman’s replacement is out after seven losses in the opening eight games of the season.
