Crystal Palace 0-0 Swindon Town

League Division Three South – Att: 11,540

Manager: Laurie Scott

With only one win after the opening ten games of the season Palace manager Laurie Scott went into this one under pressure. His failiure to win the game meant that he paid for it with his job. Cyril Spiers (below) would come in and take charge a couple of weeks later and, arguably, started Palace down the path that we know so well today of developing our own talent through the youth system.

 

Saturday 25th September 1982

Crystal Palace 3-0 Middlesbrough

League Division Two – Att: 7,530

Manager: Malcolm Allison

A rare win under Alan Mullery thanks to goals from Kevin Mabbutt (27, 90) and Ian Edwards (43), albeit against bottom of the table Middlesbrough. A telling statistic of how Palace fans felt about Mullery lies in the attendance – a mere 7,530 turned up when we would be comfortably getting over three times that amount on a regular basis in previous seasons.

 

Sunday 25th September 1983

Tuesday 25th September 1990

Crystal Palace 8-0 Southend United

League Cup 2nd Round 1st Leg – Att: 9,653

Manager: Steve Coppell

Crystal Palace’s second biggest win ever came in September 1990 as Southend United visited Selhurst Park in the League Cup. Both Mark Bright (2, 71, 87) and Ian Wright (25, 72, 79) would score hat-tricks with substitutes Glyn Hodges (49) and Garry Thompson (82) making up the change.

Derby County 5-0 Crystal Palace

Championship – Att: 25,258

Manager: George Burley

It is never fun getting spanked 5-0, especially when it is by a middling Championship club and your ex striker comes off the bench to wrap up the scoring, but what makes it worse is that this probably doesn’t even make the top three ‘dark days’ under Burley. Alberto Bueno (14,62) Kris Commons (41) Paul Green (68) and Shefki Kuqi (73) scored the goals for the hosts, all after James Vaughan had seen a straight red when the score was 1-0.

This was undoubtedly a low light of Edgar Davids career. Losing 5-0 and getting replaced by Andy Dorman.

Dean Moxey, who would sign for Palace in the January of this season, played for Derby on that day.
