Back in the Day: September 20th - Attilio Lombardo Scores Away Winner at Selhurst Park
Saturday 20th September 1930
Crystal Palace 7-1 Newport County
League Division Three - Att: 12,625
Manager: Fred Maven
Crystal Palace filled their boots against the team propping up the Football League. A Peter Simpson hat-trick and strikes from Herbert Butler, George Clarke, Bert Harry and Harry Havelock dwarfed the solo Newport goal from the very Welsh sounding Vince Davies.
Alliteration Watch: Billy Bagley was one of three Bill's to take to the field for County - joining Bill Hickie and Billy Thomas.
Saturday 20th September 1958
Crystal Palace 2-0 Bradford Park Avenue
League Division Four – Att: 14,134
Manager: George Smith
Tony Collins and Mike Deakin scored the goals that earned Palace the three points in this match against Bradford Park Avenue. For those of you making the assumption that this is the Bradford that we know today, you’re wrong. Bradford Park Avenue are a team of their own who currently play in the Conference North.
They played in the league from 1908 to 1970 before dropping out of the league and then going bust in 1974 – they reformed in 1987.
Alliteration Watch: Ron Routledge kept goal for Bradford with Whelan Ward, better known as 'Polly' (as you do), also turning out for the Yorkshire outfit.
In having a look at their 2015/16 squad, the two names mentioned above have nothing on the alliteration that is going on at the West Yorkshire club these days! Jason St Juste, Massiah McDonald, Chib Chilaka and Bradley Barraclough is surely unrivalled in English football.
Saturday 20th September 1986
Blackburn Rovers 0-2 Crystal Palace
League Division Two – Att: 5,921
Manager: Steve Coppell
Kevin Taylor (3) and substitute Andy Gray (90) scored the goals at the start and the end of the match to send Palace up to 2nd place in Division Two, but it was Ian Wright who stole the show, assisting both goals.
Saturday 20th September 1997
Wimbledon 0-1 Crystal Palace
Premier League – Att: 16,747
Manager: Steve Coppell
Oh, the days of away fixtures for Palace at Selhurst Park. Someone would be sat in your season ticket seat (maybe – Wimbledon didn’t sell many tickets) and the away fans would outnumber the home fans by three to one.
The visitors hit the post, and Herman Hreidarsson missed an open goal in the first half and it looked like Steve Coppell's men would rue the missed opportunities. Eleven minutes from time, however, Attilio Lombardo squeezed one in from a tight angle after Neil Sulivan spilled the ball at the Italian's feet.
Alliteration Watch: Efan Ekoku and Carl Cort played for Wimbledon in this one. Kenny Cunningham sounds like he should be listed here but just misses out. Big Hermann Hreidarsson lined up for Palace.
Saturday 20th September 2003
Crystal Palace 2-2 West Brom
League Division One - Att: 17,477
Manager: Steve Kember
After a drab first-half, a thrilling four-goal second half at Selhurst Park followed. The Whitehorse Lane End were treated to a rare second-half treat of the Eagles kicking towards their end, but it would be Rob Hulse (52) that would give the visitors the lead. The lead would not last for long. Dougie Freedman (59) levelled seven minutes later, tapping home an Andy Johnson centre.
With 89 minutes on the clock, it looked like West Brom had stolen the points when Jason Koumas, who always seemed to score against us, curled in a free kick past Cedric Berthelin from range. Steve Kember's men refused to lie down, however, and Andy Johnson grabbed his third goal of the season in injury time to earn a share of the points.

Crystal Palace 2-1 Middlesbrough
League Cup 3rd Round – Att: 5,448
Manager: Dougie Freedman
Crystal Palace marched into the fourth round of the League Cup in front of a small crowd at Selhurst Park. In fact, fewer people were there than the number of fans that would travel to Old Trafford for the Quarter Final.
Jonny Williams released Wilfried Zaha down the left and the winger cut inside and his deflected shot found the back of the net. Then an “I was there” moment occurred as Zaha tormented ‘Boro down the left and looped a cross to the back stick. Calvin Andrew met the ball and looped a header back over the keeper to make it 2-0. Not many Palace fans saw Calvin score live! Merouane Zemmama promptly got the visitors back in the match scoring three minutes later on 55 minutes, but Palace would hold out for yet another home tie in the fourth round against Southampton.
